First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah

First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah

Ibne Abbaas (ra) relates that the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam said:

“Good deeds performed on other days are not superior to those performed on these (first ten days of Dhul Hajjah).” The companions (ra) inquired: “Not even Jihaad?” He replied: “Not even Jihaad, except for that person who goes out putting himself and his wealth in danger and does not return with anything.” (Bukhaari)

Fasting on the day of Arafah:

Hadrat Abu Qatada (ra) reported, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) said (An excerpt from a long hadith):

"I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Arafah (i.e. 9th of Dhul-Hijjah) will atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming year" [Sahih Muslim, The Book of Fasting]

It is Waajib for every adult Muslim to recite the Takbeeraat-e-Tashreeq audibly after every fardh Salaat from the Fajr of 9th Dhul-Hijjah to the Asr of 13th Dhul-Hijjah (i.e. total of twenty three fardh Salaat). Women should not recite it loudly but silently.

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illallahu Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Wa lillahil Hamd.

Things to do on the day of Eid

On the day of Eid-ul-Adh'ha the Prophet Muhammad (saw) used to do the following things.

- To adorn oneself as permitted by Shari'at.

- To take a bath.

- To clean the teeth with Miswaak.

- To wear the best cloths that one has.

- To use perfume.

- To rise early in the morning.

- To go to the Eid Gaah very early.

- To avoid eating before going to the Eid Gaah.

- To offer Eid prayer in the Eid Gaah, that is not to offer it in the mosque of the locality without any legitimate excuse.

- To go to the Eid Gaah by one way and to come back another way.

- To recite Takbeer slowly on the way to the Eid Gaah

“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illallahu Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar , Wa lillahil Hamd."

"Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. There is no deity besides Allah and Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest and all praises are for Allah only."

The Sunnah of Ibraahem alayhi salaam - the Qurbaani. It is to be performed on 10th, 11th or 12th Dhul-Hijjah.

Regarding Qurbaani, the Prophet saIlallahu alayhi wasallam said:

"There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of Qurbaani than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on (the Day of judgment) with its horn, hair, and hooves (to be weighed). The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart." (Tirmizi, Ibne Maajah).
